Do What I SAY......

Confession? I've committed the cardinal business sin - I've neglected my own business in favor of doing work for clients. A classic case of "Do what I say, not what I do!"

There were a variety of very valid reasons why I was too busy to listen to myself:

  • First, there was a rush market research report
  • Next, there was a conference (which was actually about content marketing - and I promptly did nothing I learned from the great Mark Burgess)
  • Next, there was a business tradeshow
  • Then, we all know what "back in the office" looks like, right?
  • Next, there was a small writing project for a client
  • Then, there was another conference
  • Finally, there was a go-live on a client website
  • All while balancing a full-time job

The irony, of course, is that I tell clients (and co-workers) daily how to better manage their social media reach, how to engage with customers, how important it is to support the brand with consistency, etc. "Make a plan and stick with it" is a mantra.

At the end of the day, it's about commitment. I'm committed to supporting small business clients who need help demystifying marketing complexities and to support them as they grow. I simply forgot that part of that commitment includes my own business!

To think about....
What would happen if you committed 15 minutes a day to your business? (An hour is better, of course!). Engaged only in strategic work which  gives meaningful value to your efforts? Focused on offering value* to clients and potential clients?

Your total commitment, even if for only for 15 minutes, makes a difference. And, remember, the secret is to keep doing it!
